The Man Behind the Art
The creator of hundreds of paintings, Arnold Friberg (1913 – 2010) is recognized as one of America’s great visual historians, chronicling our foremost leaders in their times of need. Friberg’s The Prayer at Valley Forge, portraying a kneeling George Washington, was a favorite of President Ronald Reagan:
“One of the most inspiring portrayals of American history is that of George Washington on his knees in the snow at Valley Forge.”
- Ronald Reagan | Thanksgiving Proclamation 1986
In addition to painting The Prayer, Friberg had a long and illustrious career, including:
- Recognition as a Lifetime Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts;
- Nomination for an Academy Award for work on the epic motion picture The Ten Commandments with legendary Hollywood producer and director, Cecil B. DeMille;
- Two separate commissions to paint portraits of the Prince of Wales (now King Charles III) in 1978 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1990, with the famous thoroughbred, Centenial, both of which were painted at Buckingham Palace; and
- Recognition as an honorary member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (bestowed in recognition of the more than 200 paintings Friberg did of the Mounties).
