The Prayer at Valley Forge

Head bowed low, the fate of a starving and frozen Continental Army in his hands and the weight of a struggling young nation on his shoulders, General George Washington knelt in the snow at Valley Forge and clasped his hands in desperate prayer. Friberg said he used the medium of oil paint, “to recall the pain, the cold of that cruel winter of 1777-1778, and to pay tribute to the tall and heavy-burdened man who alone held the struggling nation together.” Blueskin, Washington’s gray stallion, was an eyewitness to the true emotion of the kneeling George Washington—the man who led America to victory in the American Revolution and, once again, stood tall as the First President of the United States.
